McIndoe’s Nick Parkhouse is voted one of finest surgeons by Tatler Magazine

As published in the April edition of the Tatler magazine, Plastic Surgeon Mr Nick Parkhouse was voted ‘Best for your Bits’ a polite of talking about the cosmetic procedure ‘labiaplasty’.

To quote ‘he is deft a dealing with ladies more intimate bits but was keen to point out his has a big interest in facial rejuvenation surgery too. Apparently as women get older everything stretches and becomes a bit well weary- looking. With the globalisation of the Brazilian and bikini’s getting skimpier, there’s an increase in labial reduction. Tidying up excessive skin that  can causes embarrassing bulges. Nick Parkhouse can also tighten up the vaginal walls after childbirth, restoring confidence and in many cases, a decent sex life’.

Investing In Protection

The McIndoe Surgical Centre has recently taken ownership of a brand new state-of-the-art autoclave, investing over £22,000 to ensure patients benefit from the most up-to-date instrument sterilization protecting against infections.

Although it is unusual for a hospital of McIndoe’s size to have such a high tech unit in-house, the award winning hospital believes it is a vital tool in maintaining high standards of care and has always insisted on having its own sterilising equipment on site.

The autoclave is a steel clad chamber used for steam sterilising of surgical instruments – the process terminates microorganisms, deeming the instruments sterile and safe to use on patients. Sterilization can take between approx. 17 – 48 minutes depending on the cycle and the new autoclave can hold up to 40 sets of instruments which is double the capacity of its predecessor.

Jo Nolan, Executive Director commented: “This is a fabulous asset for the hospital; the new machine uses state-of-the-art technology and is far more efficient than its predecessor. Having our own sterilising equipment on site means there are no transportation costs involved in making sure all the surgical instruments are safe to use and the hospital has overall control over the turnaround of the cleaning process, meaning a more efficient working practise.”

Let the Sun Shine In

Mr Paul Banwell, a consultant plastic surgeon here at McIndoe and a sun awareness expert, gave his advice to Bright FM readers today about the unseasonably warm weather we are experiencing in March!

He said while it is great for the soul to experience the heat again after cold, damp winter months, it is vital to remember that sun protection is still essential. You may feel strange slapping on sun cream in March but remember that the strength of the sun’s UV rays will still be harmful even though we are not technically in the summer months yet.

Paul advised to keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water, wear your sun glasses to protect your eyes, a hat to help keep the sun off your face and neck and above all your SPF30+ sun cream every day!

To enjoy the full interview with Paul Banwell please visit Bright FM website here: http://www.brightfm.net/brightstory.asp?id=4149

Cosmetic Mole Removal – the facts!

Darryl Coombes an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon at McIndoe Surgical Centre talked to us about cosmetic mole removal recently.

Not every mole can be classified as a “beauty spot” and Darryl went on to tell us, “some facial and neck moles can not only be unsightly but can also be traumatised by clothing, jewellery, and in men, when shaving.

Cosmetic mole removal is a painless technique that does not leave any significant scarring and the treatment is usually carried out under a local anaesthetic.

After assessing the mole, your surgeon will place some local anaesthetic cream over it and will then inject the area around the mole with local anaesthetic. The injection should be painless due to the prior application of the anaesthetic cream and the two combined makes it a very comfortable procedure to undergo.

The mole is then removed. In the majority of cases it will be sent off for analysis to ensure it is not cancerous, however this is up to the discretion of the surgeon.

Following the removal of the mole the area is cauterised with a special instrument to stop the bleeding then an antibacterial dressing is applied. The duration of the procedure takes 5-10 minutes and the dressing is kept in place for 7 days. Once you remove it a scab will remain which would naturally come away 5 – 7 days later, leaving healed skin. In some cases there may be a very small mark that is barely perceptible, but in the majority of cases the skin will be entirely blemish free.”

A recent patient of Darryl said “”I had always been self-conscious of the mole on the side of my face but concerned that, if I had it removed, I would be left with a far worse scar. Having finally plucked up the courage to go ahead, Darryl Coombes immediately put me at ease and explained what to expect from the procedure. Although I was warned that the resulting blemish might take a while to settle, it’s amazing! After only 2 weeks there is barely a mark at all! I am so pleased – I just wish I’d had it removed years ago!”

Marina Brown star of Discovery Show in Chat Magazine

When Marina applied to be on TV in order to change her life she could never have dreamed how well it would turn out for her.

After losing 14 stone in weight following a Gastric Bypass operation Marina was over the moon, except for her now excess skin which covered her body and made her sore and very uncomfortable. She was unable to do everyday tasks like swimming and riding a bike and even walking could leave her red and sore from the rubbing skin.

So when she was chosen for a full body lift by Discovery Channel’s “My Naked Secret” show her dream had finally begun.

Consultant Plastic surgeon John Pereira, performed her operation in May 2011 and Marina has never looked back. After attending consultations with a couple of other hospitals for the TV show Marina said “John Pereira and McIndoe won hands down when I visited them. Other surgeons and clinics I went to made me feel like I was on a conveyor belt but John listened to me and took the time to know what I wanted. He was almost intuitive to what I needed.”

You can read Marina’s full story in Chat magazine Issue 8 dated 23rd February 2012.
