McIndoe Plastic Surgeon Mr Balj Dheansa is hoping to spread some Christmas Cheer by offering cosmetic surgery consultations at his special clinic on Thursday 20th January for just £40.

Mr Dheansa is keen to stress that this will be a proper full length consultation at McIndoe Surgical Centre, East Grinstead. His private practice covers all aspects of cosmetic surgery – breast enlargement, breast reduction, breast mastopexy (uplift), face lift, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), nose reshaping (rhinoplasty), liposuction and tummy tuck (abdominoplasty).

And if that isn’t a good deal, should you decide to proceed with surgery McIndoe Surgical Centre are able to help you fund this cost of treatment with the help of the BMI Credit Card. As with any credit facility terms and conditions apply*

Bill Foxley, one of the best known of Archibald McIndoe’s “Guinea Pigs” has died at the age of 87. He was one of the most badly burnt airmen from World War 11, after re-entering a burning plane to try and save a dying comrade. He emerged with horrific burns that required a total of 36 operations on his face and became part of the club of burned airmen that Archibald McIndoe pioneered his surgical treatments on.

Mr Baljit Dheansa a burns specialist and consultant plastic surgeon here at McIndoe Surgical Centre, was interviewed by Channel 4 news as part of their tribute to Bill Foxley and his interviewed can be seen here:

http://www.channel4.com/news/catch-up/display/playlistref/201210/clipid/201210_FOXLEY_20

Surgical techniques have changed and been adapted with the advancement of medicine and new pioneering techniques have been practised and found to be effective but Archibald McIndoe will always be known as the surgeon who made a better life for his “Guinea Pigs” here in East Grinstead.

If you have been burned recently or in the past and would like a consultation with Mr Dheansa please do not hesitate to contact our helpline on 0800 917 4922 or visit the website at www.mcindoesurgical.co.uk

The Perrywood Eagles football team are currently in 3rd place, playing in the Tandridge B League, which has 5 divisions, which is excellent as the league is notoriously the strongest in the area. ‘Perrywood Eagles always go to each match with a positive attitude and show good sportsmanship, which is becoming increasingly rare, and we are very proud of the boys performance and their attitudes’ said Simon Willé, their coach, ‘Now we have new kits for the boys that fit, and everyone can get on with playing their best, thanks to McIndoe.’

We at McIndoe wish the boys every success in the upcoming matches.

McIndoe Surgical Centre is pleased to announce the appointment of a new consultant specialist for knee surgery.

Mr Simon Ellis is the new Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at our award winning hospital and we have great pleasure in welcoming him to the team. Simon will be concentrating on arthroscopies and looking after patients with soft tissue damage.

With over 25 years experience Simon can provide a reassuring and skilled consultation with your knee problems. Local sports fans will be pleased to know that McIndoe Surgical Centre now have the only surgeon in East Grinstead who performs these procedures and is available for consultation with immediate effect.

Sports related knee injuries are no respecter of age or ability and can affect every one of us. Many will remember Michael Owen’s devastating injury during the 2006 World Cup. Having only managed to play for 51 seconds of his third game, Owen badly twisted his knee and a scan revealed he had torn the anterior cruciate ligament. He was of course sent home as there is no treatment for this painful problem, other than reconstructive surgery.

Simon Ellis will be specialising in Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) surgery. This specialist treatment formerly meant a trip to Hayward’s Heath or Redhill however local sports men and women can now avoid the hassle of the journey and take a simple trip to the McIndoe Surgical centre, here in East Grinstead.

If you would like to book an appointment with Simon or simply require more information on the treatments available please visit www.mcindoesurgical.co.uk or call our help line on 0800 917 4922.

Despite the best healthcare available and the most stringent of eating and exercise plans we all find ourselves bemoaning the inevitable wrinkles and lines as we get older. Other factors that also play a part include our exposure to the sun, our genes and lifestyle choices such as smoking.

Fortunately these days with the advances in cosmetic surgery techniques there are many things that can be done to improve the situation for men and women to give them back a more youthful image, better suited to their personality and lifestyle.

Botox can be extremely helpful in some cases for smoothing out furrows in the forehead and decreasing our frown lines that appear along the brow or around the eyes. It is however a temporary solution and will need to be routinely applied if the required look is to be maintained. Therefore ladies who want to achieve the same look, on a more permanent scale could opt for a Brow Lift. In this procedure the brow is lifted and tightened, leaving you with a smoother forehead. It can be exceptionally rejuvenating and gives you a more youthful and fresh look.

A face lift or Rhytidectomy, can help to tighten and refresh the skin around the face and neck, pulling wrinkles out and smoothing over any deep grooves. As you age the skin loses its elasticity and this procedure can be very effective in restoring a more youthful look. Scarring will always occur with any surgical procedure but the incisions are placed around and behind the ears and will be minimised as much as possible to give a fresh and smooth new look. Alternatively if you are simply unhappy with your cheeks and jowls, a mini facelift could help and is less intrusive surgically than the full face lift. Your surgeon will help you decide which procedure will give you the best result for your specific problem.

Sometimes mature ladies can suffer with drooping eyelids, where excess skin collects around the eyes and makes them look hooded and tired. Our eyes are one of our best features and it can make a huge difference when they are fresh and alert. Eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty, can be performed under local or general anaesthetic, which you can discuss with your surgeon, and the result can make you look younger and fresher. Excess skin is taken from the crease in the upper eyelid and just below the lash line on the lower eyelid and then sewn together with very fine stitching.

With many other procedures available to help turn back the hands of time, a detailed consultation with a consultant plastic surgeon here at McIndoe Surgical Centre can help you decide what will be the right choice for you. From faces to arms, tummy’s to thighs, there is usually something that can be done to help you achieve the life you want to live with the look you long for.

Our consultant plastic surgeons are all BAAPS and/or BAPRAS registered and will happily provide you with a detailed consultation to discuss your options. With no hard sell or pressure placed on you, the consultations are designed to be informative and guiding and it will be your decision on the course of action after consultation.

If you want to make a start at sending Father Time to the back of the line, please call our helpline on 0800 917 4922 to discuss a consultation.

Women across the world want to look their best and when Mother Nature hasn’t provided all you want cosmetic surgery can be an effective and viable option. However as Channel 4’s new show The Ugly Face of Beauty with Dr Christian Jessen shows, not every cosmetic surgeon and clinic will construct their business under the regulatory bodies that we have in the UK and Europe, allowing women to be sucked in with the promise of beauty, when instead they receive substandard care and dangerous procedures which do nothing to improve their already fragile situation.

Peter Arnstein from the award winning McIndoe Surgical Centre in East Grinstead, was heavily involved in the making of this new show, highlighting surgeries gone wrong, and working hard to correct the botched surgery the patients had suffered at unregulated surgeries.

Mr Arnstein said, “Rescuing patients when cosmetic surgery has gone wrong can be the most challenging and at the same time an enormously satisfying achievement, but this series “The Ugly Face of Beauty” is not about us surgeons, it shouts a powerful message: Be fully aware of what you are getting into. Every action in life comes with risk and cosmetic surgery is no exception.

I was fortunate to be able to help 3 of 6 candidates of the programme who presented with a variety of problems. The successful reparative/corrective surgery was all carried out at the McIndoe Surgical Centre, the Specialist Plastic Surgery Hospital in East Grinstead.

Although surgical complications are distressing enough, it is their description of the awful clinical environment these people found themselves trapped in which is truly worrying. Despite all the apparent regulation quality control provided by the U.K. and E.U. bodies, there still appears to be ample lea way for opportunistic cosmetic clinics to pressure sell surgery and operate in dangerously sub standard conditions without backup or guarantee.”

Let the ladies speak for themselves in the Ugly Face of Beauty, every Tuesday starting 13th July at 8pm on Channel 4 for four weeks.

With Tattoo Removal in the spotlight at the moment following the break-up of Cheryl & Ashley Cole’s marriage, John Pereira – Consultant Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeon at McIndoe Surgical Centre, East Grinstead, gives us an insight into what can be achieved and expected when needing a tattoo removed.

I frequently see patients in my outpatient clinic requesting tattoo removal. The commonest problem is a change of partner requiring removal of a name or birthdate tattoo, but a change in employment or simply a change of fashion can cause people to regret the decision that was made to have a tattoo.

Several options exist when it comes to removing tattoos and all should be discussed with a patient before one method is chosen and treatment commences. The size of the tattoo, its location, the colour and the cost of treatment all influence a patient’s treatment choice. So what are the options:

Do nothing – accept that no removal method is perfect and decide to cover the tattoo with clothing – easy in some areas and tricky in others!

Ask your tattoo artist if the offending name can be disguised in another tattoo – this can work very well at times.

Cosmetic Camouflage – The Red Cross runs courses to help people learn how to most effectively cover birthmarks and other blemishes like tattoos.

LASER treatment – this requires several different wavelength LASERs and often multiple visits to fade or remove the tattoo. Patients considering this should look carefully into the realistic outcome of treatment – ask to see pictures from the clinic of tattoos of the same colours that they want removed. Remember a course of treatment is usually required with a charge each time. Attend only established clinics with multiple wavelength LASERs and experienced operators.

Tattoo Erase is a newer modality whereby a natural chemical is tattooed over the original tattoo. The skin scabs and the scab peels off taking with it the underlying pigment. This is repeated around every 8 weeks until all the pigment is gone. The colour of the remaining skin may be altered and there may be some scarring.

Surgery – This can be the quickest and cheapest method of removing small tattoos, usually performed as an outpatient local anaesthetic procedure. Larger tattoos may need a skin graft to cover the area once it has been removed. Whilst this obviously leaves a significant scar it is a one stop procedure that appeals to many and can be explained away as the result of an accident if anyone asks.

My personal opinion is that no treatment is guaranteed to remove a tattoo without trace. Patients therefore have to have an idea of what will be left behind after treatment. Surgery will usually leave a linear scar if the tattoo is small enough to cut out and stitch closed, LASER may lighten some tattoos but still leave them readable – a disappointment if you wanted a name removed! Tattoo erase usually removes the pigment of a tattoo but often leaves some scar tissue in the shape of the original tattoo. Take your time to decide which treatment is most acceptable to you and research all costs up front so there are no surprises part way through treatment.

It was revealed recently that some 25,000 patients die unnecessarily each year within NHS hospitals, because of clots formed in the deep veins of the legs, breaking off and entering the blood stream of the lungs as pulmonary emboli.

Tom Treasure, chair of the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death, Chair of a NICE Guideline Development Group and, chair of EACTS Thoracic Committee reporting to the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, strongly suggested that most of these patients could be saved from this fate if all patients entering hospital were appropriately screened according to a set protocol and provided with prophylactic anti clotting treatment as protection.

Here at the McIndoe Surgical Centre we are proud to say such a protocol has been utilised universally for some 10 years during which time no patient within the hospital has suffered from a deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolus.

Your safety is and will always be our primary concern.
