Paul Banwell advises  “There are different types of skin cancer and it is vital that people are aware of the problems to look out for. Warning signs include any moles, lumps and bumps that may change colour or shape or even bleed.”

Mrs Portch was a sun lover throughout her teens and admits to sunbathing at every opportunity without using suncream – the complete opposite from her husband who shielded away from the sun. He was astonished when Karen spotted the pink lump on the back of his neck and from her past experiences knew it was something to be looked at.

Since 2009 Karen has had seven cancerous lumps or moles removed that have changed in colour, shape or texture. From now on Karen attitudes has changed  “”These days I stay out of the sun, don’t use sunbeds and get my tanned look from bronzer.

“I would warn people to be extra careful and vigilant as this can affect people at any age.”

Commenting on the type of surgery performed Mr Coombs said  “There was one chap who had tumours all over his face and skull and had been turned down by four surgeons in Europe and one in Russia.

“I saw him and said I would operate on him. I’d never seen anything like it before – he looked like the Elephant Man. I’d had experience operating on major deformities in the UK, but I was very nervous. I was worried about the amount of bleeding he might sustain.”

The surgery, however, was a success. Following the eight-hour operation, the 35-year-old Maltese man, named Milanko, went from hiding himself away to feeling confident enough to go out in public and even into work.

Darryl, who is still in contact with his patient, said hearing this kind of news was one of the best parts of his job.

Kate was happy to be filmed to highlight the danger of sub standard implants. Mr Dheansa removed her PIP implants one of which had ruptured and replaced them with Nagor implants at the McIndoe Surgical Centre.  Kate was thrilled with the result and happy in the knowledge PIP implants had been removed.
